The US Midwest needs bioneers not bureaucrats

The Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Agriculture, the Forest Service and the rest of the bureaucrats in Washington have had their turn. Industrial farmers are still plowing right into creek beds, paper mills are still clear-cutting timber lands, chemical companies are still dumping toxins on the land and into the river...

I'm proposing a new grassroots group based in Cairo, Illinois - a town with many social ills but quite strategically located to address river-related problems. We need a group that is focused and based in America's heartland to work on the transition to reasonable ecological farming and forestry practices. We need ecological economics to help transform towns and cities like Cairo and New Orleans toward sustainability.

I know it's an ambitious proposal, but someone has to take a step. How bout you?
