Many companies, it seems are choosing that path. In 2008, two percent of the 248 employers surveyed by Watson Wyatt in mid-October already had reduced their 401(k) or 403(b) match in response to the crisis, while 4% expected to take that step in t...

I remember being struck by something Winona LaDuke said in a Bioneers plenary speech in 2007 in reference to the statement- 'just throw it away'. She said, just where is 'away'... I think The Story of Stuff helps kids think about the consequences ...

I think especially for artists, you have to measure your level of success based on your own ability to keep doing the work in a way that is fulfilling for you. If you measure it only in terms of financial success, you're resting your level of happ...

Who has the power?

Preemption is commonly raised when a state or municipality tries to create legislation in an area where the federal government has already set the rules.

Legally, preemption is based in the Constitution, which says in Article VI that "the laws of the United States...shall be the supreme law of the land."

When it comes to environmental laws, there's a practical basis as well. Keeping environmental laws uniform around the country prevents states from enticing business with lax regulation, and pr… Continue

Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan was the keynote speaker at the Georgia Organics Conference March 21, 2009. The event was held at Agnes Scott College. He addressed the audience after they enjoyed a farmers feast (made from local food) about his thoughts on the "state of the movement." Here is his speech. Can't wait to see him at Bioneers 2009 in October.

Salt Singers

Just saw a moving video The Salt Song Trail, given to us by Melissa Nelson of The Cultural Conservancy.

The Salt Songs are mourning songs that traditionally begin at sundown and are sung through the night and into the morning before sunrise. The last four songs are… Continue

Logging the Sequoias

Just watched a video, Among the Giant Sequoias. The narrator mentioned that only 4% of the native forests are left. I saw the same statistic watching The Story of Stuff.
It is hard to believe that logging is still happening. They recommend moving the Sequoias from the National Forest Service to the National Park Service. Take a look at their site for ways to get involved.
