Hello to my fellow Bioneers!
Although I would class myself as a green thinker, a pidgeon hole that I'm happier to occupy is post-consumerist survivalist. What's the difference, you ask? Well, the former looks at how we are going to undo the mess we're in, the later looks at how we will live once we've done that.
I work in the high tech manufacturing sector - for a company that helps design and manufacture solar power solutions and I'm also the founder of a business platform intended to turn ideas and concepts into projects, and ultimately, viable business opportunities. I also hold a patent for technology that can be used in the manufacture of solar concentrators.
For those who are not familiar with my part of the world, here are a few points of interest; Famous people from my city: Sting, Mark Knopfler, Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Ridley Scott and it's the place where the man who designed the iMac & iPod studied.
It was also the home for Charles Parsons (inventor of the steam turbine), George Stephenson (inventor of the locomotive engine) and Joseph Swan (inventor of the incandescent lightbulb) - come to think of it, it's the home of some of the first 'climate criminals'. But to make up for that it did boast the first eco house - Cragside - which belonged to Lord Armstrong in the 19th century. It was the first house to be lit by electricy which was generated by hydro. In the modern day, it is home to NaREC, the centre for New and Renewable Energy. The area also hosts the beautiful Northumberland National Park, Hadrian's Wall (marking the northern frontier of the Roman Empire) and the Angel of the North.
What are you working on?
My focus is on energy self-sufficiency.
Favorite Book(s):
This one saved me from being caught up in the property boom of the past few years - 'Boom Bust, The depression of 2010' [Fred Harrisson, 2005]. I think the title says it all.
Favorite Musician:
My tastes are so varied, it's hard to say, but I do like the Magic Numbers and the Kings of Leon at the moment.
